PROGETTO INTERREG AFTERALPINEICE
Managing new ice- and permafrost-free areas in the Alps. Conserving and communicating new ecosystems in Alpine protected areas and beyond

Solo soluzioni condivise saranno efficaci.
Picture the Alps without glaciers. This is no longer a distant scenario: ice is melting at the fastest rate ever recorded, taking with it the Alpine landscape as we know it. Yet, what is left behind is far from empty.
Patches of lichens, shrubs peeking out from between the rocks, the first insects exploring potential habitats. Pioneer species are advancing into areas once covered by ice, turning this bare ground into the birthplace of new ecosystems. At the same time, humans are drawn to these same spaces too, with the expansion of economic and recreational activities threatening biodiversity that is only just beginning to emerge.
Most Alpine glaciers lie within protected areas, where this rapid retreat poses an unprecedented challenge to their biodiversity conservation mission. Monitoring and anticipating how post-glacial environments evolve is a unique opportunity, in particular where these Alpine landmarks are bound to completely disappear. Developing solutions to protect new ice-free areas and raise awareness of the fragile ecosystems they host, as well as of the natural risks in these fast-changing territories, is the core objective of the AfterAlpineIce project. Strategies will emerge from the exchange between stakeholders across all relevant sectors and levels, and will be tested in protected areas with different status and at different stages of glacier retreat.
The whole Alpine region is affected by these transformations. Only shared solutions will be effective.
